Report: Portugal to roll-out 5G in 2020
20/03/2020
Data and analytics company GlobalData expects the launch of commercial 5G in Portugal by the end of this year.

The prediction comes in the light of Portuguese regulator ANACOM’s imminent plans to auction 5G spectrum, as well as a variety of MNOs - including NOS and Vodafone - being involved in technical trials. The information is found in GlobalData’s ‘Portugal Mobile Broadband Forecast’ report which was published this week.
Speaking of the situation in Portugal, Tomasz Kulinski, senior technology analyst at GlobalData, said: “The range of frequencies [on offer] is currently [that which is] used globally in 5G network launches.
“Sub-1GHz frequencies such as the 700MHz band are useful for achieving widespread coverage. The 1-6GHz bands provide balanced benefits for coverage and bandwidth, as the latter grows with higher frequencies.”
He continued: “The upcoming auction will also cover spectrum in bands such as 900MHz, 1800MHz, 2.1GHz and 2.6GHz, which are beneficial not only for 5G services, but also for the provision of mobile broadband services on the other technology generations."
This year’s CCW takes place in Madrid, in the heart of the southern European critical communications market. To join us in November, register your interest here.
